Get Cultural in Rural Spain

Extremadura

With Spain welcoming a record 85.1 million international visitors in 2023, a figure expected to grow all through 2024 and beyond, the need for more conscious, respectful and regenerative tourism is more necessary than ever. Culture and artisanal processes can play a key role in attracting conscious and respectful tourism, contributing to the rejuvenation of more rural areas!

One of the best examples of how tourism can be used to give back in a meaningful way, is seen in La Vera, a region in Extremadura in west Spain. Accessible in just over four hours from Madrid by bus or five hours by train, it’s a perfect destination to take escape from Madrid’s bustle and explore Spain’s more rural and stunning regions.

Get immersed in local culture of La Vera by exploring the high-quality work and produce of local artisans in some of this region’s towns and cities. Artist-run initiatives such as Las Galliciolas, local artists offering handmade leather goods, and Hititas, workshops which form a crucial part of La Vera’s thriving arts and craft scene, have put this region on the map. Support the local economies and talented artisans by spending a few days touring the region of La Vera; learn about the history of this region, its culture, customs and people. All while revitalising this rural region.

See the crafting of traditional drums and flutes in Gargüera, or visit the towns of Arroyomolinos de La Vera for a lesson in verata architecture, wherein local architects are keeping tradition alive. What about seeing exquisite shoemaking or embroidery in Jaraiz de La Vera, and the incredible ceramics of local artists in Villanueva de La Vera, renowned for being some of the region’s best.

Afterwards, why not explore more of Extremadura by visiting one of its three UNESCO Heritage sites, The Archaeological Ensemble of Mérida, a roman amphitheatre opened in 8 BC, can be found in Extremadura’s charming capital Mérida. It hosts the International Classical Theatre Festival every summer! While Monfragüe National Park, the Jerte valley and the region’s characteristic wooded pastures are a must visit, especially during the spring to see its cherry blossoms in bloom. The nearby towns of Badajoz and Cáceres also offer an authentic glimpse into rural Spanish life!

Top tip: Mérida can be accessed from Badajoz airport, or from La Vera in just a couple of hours by bus. Why not hire a car to make the most of the stunning driving routes?

Clean beaches in Mexico

Cozumel

The picturesque shores of Cozumel are not only beautiful, but they’re an important site for the hundreds of turtles that use the soft, white sand everyone loves as a vital nesting ground. But now, with overtourism a real concern for this area, local communities and in-destination hotels are working together to protect this species. So, head to Mexico’s Yucatán shores to give back to the turtles!

The Tortuguero Committee organises education summer camps which are open to volunteers, beach clean-ups just before the nesting season begins, as well as chances to monitor and conserve the nests, and provide information to guests about the work begin carried out. Awareness is one of the main drivers of conservation, and these initiatives are ways to connect guests with the environment and the local community.
