Cold-Weather and So Much More

Think these destinations are just for winter? Think again.

Hokkaido, Japan

Though commonly overlooked, Hokkaido is perfect year-round! During winter, marvel at Japan’s snow-capped beauty from the warmth of an onsen (hot spring) in a traditional Ryokan (inn), or head to the 7-day-long Sapporo Snow Festival for snow sculptures, music concerts, and incredible food.

In spring, beat the crowds flocking to see Japan’s famous cherry blossoms and head to Goryokaku Tower in Hakodate, Asahigaoka Park in Furano, or Mt. Tengu in Otaru for thousands of beautiful blooms. While autumn brings a chance to drive the short journey from Sapporo to Jozankei Onsen town, to soak in its famous hot springs and enjoy the unforgettable explosion of autumnal foliage.

Vail, Colorado

While Vail is renowned as one of the largest ski resorts, it’s a great destination for year-round rest and rejuvenation. In the summer or autumn, the hiking and bike routes of East Vail such as Booth Falls, Gore Creek and Deluge Lake Trail are simply unmissable, offering a welcome alternative for non-skiers or for an active summer vacation.

For something different (and family-friendly) why not hike with llamas or dash through the snow in a horse-drawn sleigh in Vail Valley’s beautiful backcountry trails? While adrenaline-seekers can head to the Vail Nordic Center at the base of Vail Mountain for over 17km of groomed trails suitable for all levels.
